2017 Roofing Material Trends: Copper, Slate and Metal Roofing

When you think of a roof, you usually start by envisioning commonly used dark-colored asphalt shingles in a standard pattern. Traditional asphalt shingles are still a popular choice because they are economical and they offer the homeowner a wide range of styles and colors. However, many homeowners are opting to use different materials which may cost more upfront but can last for decades. These are some of the trends in roofing materials that we're seeing in 2017:

Metal Roofing. As you drive through towns like Willoughby or Chardon, you may be seeing evidence of this trend. Many older homes in need of roofing repair or a roof remodel have opted for metal, rather than shingles, and some new construction homes are being built with a metal roof from the start. One reason for this is aesthetics; for example, a black metal roof can be particularly striking on a white or red farmhouse. Aside from the aesthetic appeal, a metal roof also offers one key benefit—longevity. Depending on the materials used and the quality of the roof installation, a metal roof can last anywhere from 40 to 70 years, which can potentially raise your property value. Other benefits include wind and fire resistance and energy efficiency.

Copper Roofing. Like metal, copper is a great long-term roofing material, due in large part to its low maintenance. Many homeowners choose copper for its visual appeal and character, as well as the fact that it requires no finishing or painting. Copper's malleability makes it a good material to create any domes or curved roofing shapes.

Slate Roofing. Slate has long been used for roofing and affords the same longevity for your roof that metal and copper do. In fact, if a slate roof is installed properly, it can last for more than a century! Slate is made of dense rock and is inherently designed to withstand wind and resist fire. However, slate is a heavier option than metal or copper, so if you are interested in redesigning your roof with slate, you must have your home's structure evaluated to ensure the weight will be supported.
