We had the pleasure of working with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources at the Law Enforcement and Geological Survey Center at Alum Creek State Park in Delaware, OH in the fall of 2025. This roof was originally a rubber roof in need of replacement. The ODNR requested a new PVC roof to be placed on the Survey Center, and we were there to deliver.

Last summer, RJK Roofing Solutions had the opportunity to replace the roof of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Asphalt was seen as the roofing solution for this project because of its durability, curb-appeal, and ease of installation. It was the clear choice due to the complexity of the project. With the many unique design elements of this roof, such as the turrets, asphalt shingles were installed to ensure efficiency of installation and cost. Because of the history of this building, we wanted a roofing solution that would stand the test of time as well as enhance the visual appeal of the building.

The shingles installed were CertainTeed’s Grand Manor asphalt shingles in Gatehouse Slate. Our customer loved the option of getting a new roof with beautiful designer shingles that would catch the eye of those in the community. Asphalt enabled the customer to choose from a wide selection of color and style options. These beautiful grey designer shingles give the project a classic look. A section where the beauty of these shingles stands out is on the turrets. Any other material would not have looked as clean and polished as these shingles do in these unique areas of the roof as well as enhance the design of the roof.

Another benefit of asphalt’s performance is weather resistance. Any damage to a historical building could be devastating. Since the building is located in one of the snowiest parts of Ohio, durability was crucial. Both RJK Roofing Solutions and the customer were able to have the peace of mind knowing that the installed asphalt could stand up to high winds, snow storms, and ice build-up.

Overall, this project stands out among its peers. The quality of the asphalt shingles and attention to detail of all those involved ensure that the project is extraordinary. This project proved to have its challenges due to hard-to-reach areas, steep slope, and placement of complex sections. Proper Ventilation Prevents Ice Dams

It’s that time of year again! The air is cooler, and the snow is coming sooner than later. Is your roof prepared for the freeze?

Proper roof ventilation works when attic air is moving. Air can be moved mechanically which requires a power source. However, the natural and most common method of moving the air is a roof system that has an air intake and an air exhaust. Installed properly, cool air enters through the intake, and hot air rises or escapes through the exhaust. Without an exhaust and intake, hot air will not escape.

The most common type of exhaust vents are ridge vents. These vents are installed at the peak of your roof. With proper ventilation, the hot air rises from these vents. The wind rolling over ridge vents will actually pull the hot air out of the vents.

Intake vents are commonly soffit vents under the eaves of your roof. Cool air enters these vents and pushes the hot air up through the ridge vents.

So what does this have to do with your roof and ice dams? To answer this, we need to determine how an ice dam forms.

Hot air trapped in your attic heats the roof from underneath which melts the snow on the roof. The melting snow falls to the lower edges of the roof where the roof is cooler, such as the overhang. The snow melts, then refreezes, creating a dam of ice. The dam grows and then gets under the shingles which creates pressure to pull apart the shingles. This creates an entry point for moisture as the ice dam melts causing damage to your roof as well as the inside of your home. The moisture from ice dams will shorten the life of your roof as well as damage your walls and ceilings.

A properly ventilated home allows the hot air to escape, keeping the attic and roof cooler. This prevents the thawing and freezing cycle which, in turn, prevents ice dams from occurring. A properly ventilated home is easy to spot. Snow is on the roof, but no icicles can be found. Icicles are fun for children, but are devastating for a home.
