Understanding Warranties

You are interested in replacing your roof, but you don’t know anything about the warranties that are offered.  How can you make an informed decision on what is right for you?  Let us help you understand what kind of roof warranties are available.

The standard product warranty covers any issue that may have occurred in the manufacturing process.  This is referred to as a manufacturing defect.  This warranty covers a limited specific time period, usually 10 years, and varies by the shingle selected.  This warranty will cover the cost to repair or replace the defective shingles including the labor.  The warranty will also offer blow off and algae coverage for a specific period.  This type of warranty is transferrable to one additional owner.

The standard warranty is available to anyone who installs shingles on a roof, but you do not want to have to worry about replacing your roof again.  An extended warranty is preferable for that piece of mind that your roof is completed properly and your investment is protected.  You may decline an extended warranty on your electronics, but an extended warranty is definitely what you want for your roof.

An extended warranty provides coverage in addition to the standard warranty.  This warranty is only available when you use a contractor that is credentialed by the manufacturer.  An approved contractor must pass certain requirements which include financial stability, proven customer service, insurance coverage, and some coursework.  The contractor will install the full roof system, not just shingles.  Because the contractor is proven, they are permitted to offer the best extended warranty which includes a 50-year material warranty in addition to a workmanship warranty.  Roofs that receive the extended warranty are inspected by the manufacturer to be sure your roof is done right.
