Most Common Summer Roof Problems

Summer in Northeast Ohio can be unpredictable. One day temperatures may soar into the 90s; the next day, a heavy summer rainstorm can cause the temperature to drop into the 60s. With summer variations in temperature and weather conditions, your home's roof can be susceptible to some common issues:

  • Storm damage: This is the most obvious—and usually the easiest to detect—problem during the summer time. Of course, a fallen tree laying across your roof is much easier to recognize than some "unseen" damage that would only be recognizable to a trained professional. This kind of damage may be sagging areas or loose shingles—still serious issues that need to be addressed.
  • Deterioration: While our temperatures in Greater Cleveland may not soar to the temps experienced in places like Las Vegas or Phoenix, we still experience some very hot conditions over the course of the summer. This means our roof experiences higher UV ray exposure, which can dry out the shingles. When shingles are too dry, they may fall away from the roof deck, leaving it exposed. If you see random roof shingles laying around your yard or stuck in gutters, you likely have a problem with shingle deterioration.
  • Leaks: Many times, a heavy summer downpour will expose a roof leak, usually evident in water dripping or pooling on the ceiling or dripping down the wall. At the first sign of a leak, you should call a roofing professional to assess the situation and recommend a repair.
  • Mold and Algae Growth: Excessive rain and heat also create the perfect environment for mold and algae growth. If left untreated, these contaminants can damage roofing shingles and the roof's structural integrity. Just as you would with a leak, let your local roofing contractor know of any mold and algae growth. If you are unable to access your roof to assess any potential growth, or you do not feel safe doing so, your roofing contractor can take a look periodically to ensure any contaminant growth is quickly detected and treated.
